I was introduced to the wonderful work of Edward Ardizzone through this book, gifted to me one Christmas when I was around 6 by my Great Aunt and Uncle, Barbara and Bruce. And what a civilised Christmas present – written by Graham Greene, no less!

The illustrations are beautiful. The pen work is almost sketchy, the fluid lines filling the images with movement, whilst the watercolour work radiates light in even the darkest scenes.

I snap up every Ardizzone edition I come across in second-hand bookshops and have never been less than delighted with what I find inside: wonderful images that seem so effortlessly perfect. As a footnote, the Great Uncle Bruce who gave me the book was Bruce Martin, the designer of the K8 telephone box.
